Hi everyone,
Welcome to Sweet Eats! This blog is being run as a project for an online journalism course at Rowan University. I’m not a journalism major, but I chose this class because I’m interested in how technology can alter the communication process, how online norms and values develop, and how the news media adapts to a continually changing online landscape. My major is Writing, with a concentration in new media writing and publishing.
I’ve never run a blog before, but writing in new styles or for different purposes is exciting. The writing process can be daunting, but writing and editing a piece is kind of like cleaning a badly tarnished silver spoon: rusty at first, but clearer and shinier with each subsequent buff of polish, until finally it sparkles.
This semester, we’ll be going on a tour of the best bakeries in South Jersey and (digitally) sampling the best pastries and baked goods they have to offer. I’ve never geared any of my writing projects or coursework toward food reviews before, but the connection between eating and writing came easily to me. During any kind of writing project, I get up frequently for snack breaks. (Sometimes, you can only find the exact word or the phrase you’re searching for when you’re looking for something else completely, like last night’s leftovers.)
Baking is also a great way to take a break when you’re trying to climb out from underneath a mountain of coursework: it’s relaxing, and requires your full attention (so you can’t think about how much work you aren’t getting done), and then when the oven goes off, you have cupcakes!
There are some great bakeries in New Jersey, and I imagine people want to learn more about which ones have the best miniature cupcakes, which ones to go to for brownies and which ones have the best quality for the best price. To cover this beat, I plan to visit bakeries across South Jersey, talk to their owners, and photograph and review the products.
